Private Student Loan Consolidation

Filed under: Uncategorized — studentloan @ 2:28 pm

If you were among the many students who either weren’t eligible for federal student loans or your federal loans didn’t cover everything and you had to take out private student loans, take heart.  All those loan payments are coming due and you may feel powerless to pay them all but a private student loan consolidation.may help you get it under control.

As a rule consolidating serves several purposes.  First, it takes all those smaller payments and combines them into one.  This makes it easier to keep up with.  Secondly, nine out of ten times it will reduce your monthly payment and extend your loan payment time giving you a little more money to live on while you are establishing yourself in your new after college life.  It also improves your credit score because one large loan looks better than many smaller ones.

If you are consolidating, look for the lender offering the lowest interest rate and the most flexible terms.  In the event that you suffer a hardship at some point you may need forbearance or deferment until the hardship passes. Do not, however, be flexible on the interest rate.  A fixed APR is better than a variable one.  A variable APR causes your payment to fluctuate making it harder to manage your finances.

Be aware that private student loans and federal student loans cannot be consolidated together.  Also for private student loan consolidation you may need a cosigner.  Of course, the better your and your cosigner’s credit score, the lower your APR will be.  Make sure that the new consolidated payment is less than the combined total of the payments you are consolidating.

If you are considering private student loan consolidation., many companies offer online applications making it easier and less time consuming to consolidate.
